As yes, September 13, 1998...I remember it well...but, considering that I'm a bit longwinded, I'll attempt to keep this short and snappy...

All around me, I heard talk of Metallica's San Diego performance possibly going to be bad, sloppy maybe. After all, it was the last date on the tour, and the boys must be totallly spent by then. Who knows, maybe they were spent...but, you couldn't fucking tell going by their performance!

What small bit can I say about the opening acts ? Jerry Cantrell was awesome. Makes me miss AIC, but I look forward to seeing more from him on his own...I bet ya'll who were there wonder what was up with his keyboard player...well don't bother askin' me...I know as little as you do. ;) Oh yes, to this day, I still do not know which was more hysterically funny...the pranks Jason and the roadies played on Days of the New, or the hissy fit Travis threw because of it!
Ok, on to Metallica...they couldn't have picked a better song to open with than Breadfan ! I had totally been on a Breadfan binge in the days leading up to the concert. And it was a surprise...I didn't see it coming! (okay, so I don't spend time staring at setlists trying to predict what they'll play when they get to my neck of the woods)

The set was filled with the usual, you know, Sandman, One, etc., but on the other hand, there were some real treats, I always loved The Thing that Should Not Be (THANKS Metallica, for diggin' that one up!)

Then there's the subject of the acoustic set...YES ! Again Metallica tries something new and pulls it off ! I had been looking forward to hearing Low Man's Lyric, and definetly wasn't disappointed. Although it can't replace the original, I really liked the feel of the acoustic Four Horseman. On the other hand, I was somewhat relieved when acoustic Helpless wasn't part of the set.

Overall vibe: Amazing! One of the best of Metallica's concerts I've been to. (so far ;) So...guys, come back and rock South Cali soon, will ya ?! :)
